Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr lit up the silver screen when the movie adaptation of The King and I was released 60 years ago this year. The story of the King of Siam and British schoolteacher Anna Leonowens brought the tunes of Rodgers & Hammerstein to the general public. The film won five Oscars and was nominated for four more.

On August 28 and August 31, select theatres nationwide will screen the original film with behind-the-scenes access via extra commentary from Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz.

The most recent revival of the classic from Lincoln Center Theater opened April 16, 2015 and played through June 26, 2016. Nominated for nine Tony Awards, the show took home four medallions, including Best Revival and Best Actress for Kelli O’Hara—who earned her first trophy after being nominated five times previously. Directed by Bartlett Sher and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, the show was praised for its lavish spectacle, but emotional truth; New York Times theatre critic Ben Brantely said at the time, “Its most impressive achievement is how it balances epic sweep with intimate sensibility.”
