The New York Theatre Workshop production of Here There Are Blueberries has extended its run Off-Broadway through June 16. The co-production with the Tectonic Theater Project is being directed by the play's conceiver and co-writer Moisés Kaufman. Performances are set to begin April 17, with an official opening night May 13. Performances were originally scheduled through June 2, and are now extended by two weeks.
Depicting the human realities of the Holocaust from an unexpected vantage point, the play explores an album of never-before-seen World War II-era photographs found on the desk of United States Holocaust Memorial Museum archivist Rebecca Erbelding, and the shocking story of true events behind them intersecting with the Holocaust and the lives of Nazi descendants.
The cast will include Scott Barrow, Nemuna Ceesay, Tony Award nominee Kathleen Chalfant, Noah Keyishian, Jonathan Raviv, Erika Rose, Anna Shafer, Elizabeth Stahlmann, Charlie Thurston, and Grant Varjas.
Conceived and directed by Kaufman, Here There Are Blueberries was co-authored by Kaufman and Amanda Gronich, and devised with Scott Barrow, Amy Marie Seidel, Frances Uku, Grant James Varjas, and members of Tectonic Theatre Project.
The New York Theatre Workshop production will feature scenic design by Tony Award winner Derek McLane (Purlie Victorious), costume design by Tony Award nominee Dede Ayite (A Soldier’s Play), lighting design by Tony Award nominee David Lander (Torch Song), sound design by Bobby McElver, and projection design by David Bengali (Water for Elephants). Ann James (How to Defend Yourself) will serve as intimacy coordinator and sensitivity specialist, with Amy Marie Seidel as dramaturg. Jacob Russell is the production stage manager. Casting is by Stephanie Yankwitt of TBD Casting. Tectonic Theater Project is co-producing Here There Are Blueberries in partnership with Brian and Dayna Lee.
The Tectonic Theater Project and NYTW are also partnering with the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE) as the production's content and conversation partner to curate a series of post-show discussions and engagement events for the play. These discussions will be held following performances April 25, May 1, May 7, May 16, May 23, and May 29.
