News Taye Diggs on Having "Junk in the Trunk" and the Most Challenging Role of His Lifetime (Video) Stage and screen star Taye Diggs stepped into the high-heeled shoes of rocker Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch on July 22 at Broadway's Belasco Theatre. The leading man appeared on the NBC-TV's "Today Show" on Aug. 12 and spoke about the challenges and joys of this "role of a lifetime."

When asked about changing into his Hedwig costume, Diggs says that it is putting on the heels that really allows him to get into character. "You're forced to sway your hips a certain way," he explains. "My walk from the dressing room to backstage...I've got a little junk in the trunk."

Diggs goes on to say that he never thought he'd have the opportunity to play the title character, who is German. "I never thought I'd have the opportunity. Thank goodness John Cameron Mitchell and their open-mindedness, they had me on a list and called me up and I immediately accepted."

"Today Show" hosts Hoda Kotb and Matt Lauer ask the star how he is dealing with the demands of the Broadway schedule and while he admits that it is difficult, he continues to love it. Diggs goes on to say that playing Hedwig is "the role of a lifetime" and that he can guarantee that he will "never play anything as challenging as this...I can't imagine that I'll ever be challenged like this again."

Diggs is set to play the title role through Oct. 11. 

The Broadway premiere of the cult rock musical began previews March 29, 2014,  prior to an official opening April 22 with Neil Patrick Harris in the title role. Tony nominee Andrew Rannells succeeded Harris, and Michael C. Hall succeeded Rannells. Writer John Cameron Mitchell played the part after Hall, followed by Darren Criss.
