Performances begin November 12 for the New York premiere of 20th Century Blues, a new play by Susan Smith Blackburn Prize-winning playwright Susan Miller. The play looks at the lives of four women—from the mundane and the familial, to the deeply personal—who have known one another for over 40 years.
The production is directed by Tony nominee Emily Mann, and is playing The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre at The Pershing Square Signature Center.
The cast is made up of Beth Dixon (The Good Wife), three-time Helen Hayes Award winner Franchelle Stewart Dorn (‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore), Emmy Award nominee Polly Draper (thirtysomething), two-time Obie Award winner Kathryn Grody (Top Girls), Obie Award winner Ellen Parker (The Heidi Chronicles), and Charles Socarides.
20th Century Blues follows a group of women who reunite every year for a photo shoot that documents their changing and aging selves. Their friendship is tested when the private photographs have the potential to go public.
20th Century Blues will officially open November 26. Lida Orzeck and Eva Price produce the Off-Broadway engagement.
An earlier version of the play had its 2016 premiere as part of the Contemporary American Theater Festival.
The design team includes scenic designer Beowulf Boritt, costume designer Jennifer von Mayrhauser, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, and sound designer Darron L West.
