The 2024 Drama Desk Awards, recognizing the best of Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off-Broadway, were held June 10 at NYU Skirball Center, with Stereophonic emerging as the most winning production of the season. The play, which premiered at Playwrights Horizons last year before transferring to Broadway this spring, took seven categories, including Outstanding Play for playwright David Adjmi and Playwrights Horizons.
Outstanding Musical went to Audible Theater's Dead Outlaw, though Water for Elephants, with its four total wins, was the most decorated musical of the evening. The circus musical took Direction of a Musical for Jessica Stone, Sound Design of a Musical for Walter Trarbach (a three-way tie alongside Cabaret's Nick Lidster for Autograph and The Outsiders' Cody Spencer), Fight Choreography for Cha Ramos, and Puppetry for Ray Wetmore, JR Goodman, and Camille Labarre.
You can see the full list of winners below.
Recent Broadway Sweeney Todd co-stars Sutton Foster and Aaron Tveit hosted the evening.
Presenters include Shoshana Bean, Laura Benanti, Corbin Bleu, Matthew Broderick, Montego Glover, Lena Hall, Sarah Hyland, James Monroe Iglehart, Brian d'Arcy James, Nikki M. James, James Lapine, Kecia Lewis, Debra Messing, Ruthie Ann Miles, Steven Pasquale, Andrew Rannells, Seth Rudetsky, Brooke Shields, and Miriam Silverman.
Also on hand was Kelli O'Hara, who performed a special musical tribute to Lincoln Center Theater Artistic Director André Bishop, in commemoration of his receiving the inaugural William Wolf Award. James, currently a Tony nominee for her performance in Broadway's Suffs, also performed during the ceremony.
Also being honored was Nathan Lane, with the Harold S. Prince Award for lifetime achievement.
The Drama Desk Awards is one of several NYC theatre awards systems to go gender neutral with its performance categories. All performance categories include twice as many nominees as when the categories were gendered, and two winners will be named in each. A tie could lead to more than two winners in one category.
The Awards are voted on by theatre critics, journalists, editors, and publishers. This year's nominating committee comprised Martha Wade Steketee, Linda Armstrong, Dan Dinero, Peter Filichia, Kenji Fujishima, Margaret Hall, and Charles Wright.
Tickets are available at Tickets.NYU.edu.

Ensemble Award
The cast of Stereophonic—Will Brill, Andrew R. Butler, Juliana Canfield, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, Sarah Pidgeon, and Chris Stack—who execute David Adjmi’s hypernaturalistic text with extraordinary care and precision, while also performing Will Butler’s music with the freshness and life that makes us believe we are witnessing, first-hand, the creation of a new American classic.
Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award
Cole Escola, who both wrote and stars in one of this season’s biggest hits Off Broadway, Oh, Mary! Following in the long legacy of queer artists who write themselves into American history, Escola’s new “gay fantasia on national themes” is a hilarious reminder of why we must continue to interrogate our past.
Additional Special Awards
How to Dance in Ohio Authentic Autistic Representation Team—Sammi Cannold, Nicole D’Angelo, Becky Leifman, Ava Xiao-Lin Rigelhaupt, Liz Weber, and Jeremy Wein—for their steadfast support of autistic theatremakers, and their strides toward true accessibility for neurodiverse individuals both on and offstage.
Lighting designer Isabella Byrd, whose self-described technique as a “darkness designer” has earned her a cache of nominations and awards in the United States and abroad. During this season, Byrd illuminated two Broadway shows done in the round, An Enemy of the People and Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. Off-Broadway, her spotlight on quiet, small-scale stories both enchanted us in Primary Trust and mesmerized us in Infinite Life, with a parking-lot sky that marked the passage of time
Lady Irene Gandy, for career achievement. A press agent extraordinaire for over five decades, Lady Irene has always demonstrated her passion, dedication, and love for theatre. A Broadway producer and Sardi’s honoree, she is a zealous advocate for inclusion, diversity, and equity in the arts.
