The St. Louis Muny will produce the regional premiere of Kinky Boots as part of its 2019 outdoor summer season. The musical by Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein ends its Broadway run in April after five years. The Muny will be the first post-Broadway mounting of the six-time Tony-winning hit that won Best Book, Best Score, and Best Musical in 2013 in a Broadway season that also included the London import of Matilda.
Scored by Tim Minchin, the musical based on the beloved Roald Dahl children’s book will also make its Muny debut next summer during the theatre’s 101st season. The upcoming slate will also include productions of Broadway classics including Guys and Dolls, 1776, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Lerner and Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon, and the pop-rock musical Footloose.
A summer stock staple since 1919, the Muny typically draws major Broadway talents for its productions, which are staged in its 11,000-seat outdoor amphitheatre. It is America’s largest and oldest continually operating outdoor theatre.
Additional information, including dates and casting, will be announced in the coming months.
