Adrianna Hicks, who starred as Sugar in Broadway’s Tony-nominated Some Like It Hot, will star in the title role of Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma’s summer season opener, Mary Poppins.

Directed by Lyn Cramer, performances of the family favorite are scheduled for June 25-30 at the Oklahoma City Civic Center Music Hall.

Hicks, who also originated the role of Catherine of Aragon in Broadway’s Six the Musical, will be joined by more than 35 actors and dancers plus a live orchestra. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced at a later date.

“I’m so grateful to be playing such an iconic role, back home where it all began,” stated Hicks, who graduated from the University of Oklahoma Weitzenhoffer School of Musical Theatre, where she was awarded a scholarship by the Congressional Black Caucus.

Director Cramer, the Weitzenhoffer and Rothbaum Professor of Musical Theatre Dance at OU, added, “I directed her in OU’s production of Anything Goes in 2008 and choreographed her work in Rent in 2010. Her professional debut was at Lyric Theatre as one of Hairspray’s fabulous and audacious trio, The Dynamites. Directing her in that production was such a treat, and I can’t wait for her to return to Oklahoma in Lyric’s upcoming production as Mary Poppins. Adrianna will undoubtedly enchant audiences as everyone’s practically perfect nanny.”

Based on the stories of P.L. Travers and the original Walt Disney film, the stage production was co-created by Cameron Mackintosh and has a book by Oscar-winning screenwriter and Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes. The score by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman includes the film songs “Jolly Holiday,” “Step in Time,” “Feed the Birds,” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” with new songs and additional music and lyrics by the Olivier award-winning team of George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

The stage production of Mary Poppins originally opened in the West End in December 2004, running for over 1,250 performances. The production won two Olivier Awards and an Evening Standard Award and subsequently ran on Broadway for over six years.
