Soho Rep. has announced its 2016-17 season. The slate features the world premiere of Duat by Daniel Alexander Jones featuring Soul Train regular Jomama Jones; a new Richard Maxwell work with original music by Steve Earle; and workshop performances of a new play by award-winning playwright Jackie Sibblies Drury.

Kicking off its season at the Connelly Theater, Soho Rep. will welcome the return of entertainer Jones in the world premiere of Alexander Jones’ Duat, directed by and developed with Will Davis. Billed as “a little bit vaudeville, a little bit rock and soul,” the new play features music by Samora Pinderhughes, Bobby Halvorson and Jones.

The production will run October 11-November 6 featuring performances by Jones and Alexander Jones, Jacques Colimon, Toussaint Jeanlouis, Kaneza Schaal, Tenzin Gund-Morrow and Stacey Karen Robinson.

Soho Rep. will return to its Walker Street space next spring with the debut of Maxwell’s Samara, helmed by artistic director Sarah Benson. The play, billed as a celebration of “whatever it is we call home,” features original music by Earle, who also performs. He is joined by Becca Blackwell, Vinie Burrows, Steve Earle, Roy Faudree, Modesto Flako Jimenez and Paul Lazar.

“On the fringes of the frontier, a messenger embarks on an arduous journey to collect a debt from a man he’s never met,” state production notes. “Friends set out to atone for a mistake that can’t be undone. Strangers look for a little bit of comfort wherever they can find it.” Performances are set to run April 4-May 7, 2017.

In January, Soho Rep. will present a workshop presentation of a new untitled play by Sibblies Drury, directed by Benson and co-commissioned by Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Her plays include We Are Proud to Present a Presentation About the Herero of Namibia and Formerly Known as South West Africa.
