A summer workshop is in motion for a stage musical adaptation of the NBC series Smash, per Variety. News of the project was first confirmed in May of 2020.
In an exclusive interview, producer Robert Greenblatt shared his aim for a 2024 Broadway opening; the title is not yet settled. Greenblatt also said he has a draft in hand he finds exciting, and that the workshop "will most likely happen at some point this summer."
As for the cast, Greenblatt declined to name any names as the show is still in early stages and is not ready to cast. Fans of the show will remember seeing Tony nominees Megan Hilty, Brian d'Arcy James, and Jeremy Jordan as well as Tony Award winners Leslie Odom, Jr. and Christian Borle. The cast also included Broadway and theatre alums Debra Messing, Savannah Wise, Ann Harada, Joshua Bergasse, Krysta Rodriguez, Jack Davenport, Wesley Taylor, Jenny Laroche, Keith Kühl, and Raza Jaffrey. Since the show, Katharine McPhee has made her Broadway debut as Jenna Hunterson in Waitress.
The show followed writers Julia (Messing) and Tom (Borle) creating a fictitious musical about screen icon Marilyn Monroe, with the first-season following the fight for the lead between newcomer Karen Cartwright (McPhee) and seasoned chorus girl Ivy Lynn (Hilty). The musical will reportedly follow Julia and Tom as they write the fictional Bombshell, but the plot will differ from the series.
Steven Spielberg and Neil Meron, both executive producers on the series, are attached to the stage project along with Tony Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who wrote most of the original music for the TV show. Greenblatt, Meron, Shaiman, and Wittman are currently collaborating on this year's Broadway adaptation of Some Like It Hot. Choreographer Joshua Bergasse is also set to return to Smash in this new iteration.
Unlike the show, the Broadway musical will not feature covers of pop songs. Favorites from the show by Shaiman and Wittman like "They Just Keep Moving the Line" and "Let Me Be Your Star" are confirmed for musical.
The 10th anniversary of the show's premiere is this Sunday, February 6.
