Off-Broadway's Signature Theatre has announced its 2016-17 season; included in the line-up will be world-premiere plays by acclaimed playwrights Annie Baker, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Will Eno. As previously announced, the season is also set to feature a series of plays from the body of work of Suzan-Lori Parks, who has been named the Residency One playwright.

The season will launch October 18 with “Master Harold”…and the boys, written and directed by Athol Fugard, who is Signature’s Legacy playwright. Set in a small tea shop in South Africa, the play explores themes of family, race and power.

Parks’ residency kicks off October 25 with a production of The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World, directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz. Signature will also stage the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright’s Venus, directed by Lear deBessonet, as well as The Red Letter Plays: In the Blood and Fucking A, as part of the 2017-18 season.

In January 2017, Signature will present the world premiere of Everybody by Jacobs-Jenkins, whose earlier works include Gloria, An Octoroon and War, which will debut Off-Broadway next month. Directed by Lila Neugebauer, the new work is billed by the theatre as a “modern riff on one of the oldest plays in the English language.”

The production will be followed by the world premiere of a new play by Will Eno (Thom Pain, The Realistic Joneses), set to begin in February 2017. In April, Signature will stage the world premiere of The Antipodes, by Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker, also to be directed by Neugebauer.
