Two stage readings of the new musical Dancers at a Waterfall will take place in New York City May 16. Leading the cast will be Sierra Boggess (School of Rock, The Phantom of the Opera) and Joshua Dela Cruz (Aladdin).
Based on the novel Behind the Painting by Thai writer Siburapha, the musical features a score by longtime collaborators David Shrie and Richard Maltby, Jr. (the latter also penned the book with Karen Hartman).
Tak Viravan directs a company that also includes Steven Eng, Ali Ewoldt, J. Elaine Marcos, Lisa Helmi Johanson, Thom Sesma, Katie Boren, Jordan De Leon, Emily Hsu, Leon Le, Orville Mendoza, Koh Mochizuki, and Riza Takahashi.
Set in the 1930s, the musical weaves between Bangkok and Tokyo while following the intertwining lives of an American heiress, a young peasant rising in government, and a Thai diplomat.
Brad Haak will serve as music director for Scenario Co.-produced reading.
