The new musical Azul a bilingual musical has recorded a studio EP, set to release March 23. Featured in the cast will be Katerina McCrimmon (The Rose Tattoo), Robi Hager (Spring Awakening), Henry Gainza (On Your Feet!, Mr. Saturday Night), Shereen Pimentel (West Side Story), Florencia Cuenca, Xavier Cano, and Cedric Leiba Jr.
Ahead of the album's release, a music video of the musical's "Sol Del Domingo" will premiere on Playbill March 3.
The work features a book by Melis Aker and Tatiana Pandiani and a score with music by Jacinta Clusellas and lyrics by Aker, Pandiani, and Clusellas. Inspired by Rubén Darío's poetry and short stories, the musical weaves together two distinct realms to question the place of art in a capitalist society. Bluebird, a hungry and idealist poet, seeks a better life in a new land, and in a mundane post-9/11 and present-day Jackson Heights, Rita, a composer, struggles to forgive her father, understand her roots, and reconnect to a land she has never known.
The upcoming EP features arrangements and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire and Clusellas, vocal arrangements by Kurt Crowley and Clusellas, and music direction by Crowley and Lacamoire. Pandiani directed. The album was recorded at Reservoir Studios, NYC. Casting is by Michael Cassara.
The singers are backed by a band comprising Crowley, Federico Diaz, Adele Stein, Josh Plotner, Pablo Lanouguere, and Franco Pinna. The album is partially funded by the NYC Women's Fund for Media, Music and Theatre.
54 Below will host a celebration for the album's release March 23, with Mandy Gonzalez, Robin de Jesús, McCrimmon, Hager, and more set to perform. Pandiani is helming the concert evening, which is produced by Anabel Manuela Romero, Ryan Duncan-Ayala, and Clusellas. Tickets for the concert are available at 54Below.com.
The musical was previously developed at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center.
