Broadway's revival of Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks has released a new video that gives audiences a look at the play about sibling rivalry and brotherly love. Previews began September 27 at the Golden Theatre for the limited engagement which will open October 20 for a run through January 15, 2023. Take a look at highlights from the production above.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II—in his Broadway debut—and Tony nominee Corey Hawkins (Six Degrees of Separation, Romeo & Juliet) star as brothers Lincoln and Booth, named by their father as a joke, in the two-hander.
Directing the production is Tony winner Kenny Leon, who helms the creative team comprised of scenic designer Arnulfo Maldonado, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Allen Lee Hughes, and sound designer Justin Ellington. Casting is by Calleri Jensen Davis, and Kamra Jacobs is the production stage manager.
Topdog/Underdog celebrates its 20th anniversary with the production, having made its world premiere Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2001 and subsequently transferred to Broadway the following year. The Public Theater production starred Don Cheadle and Jeffrey Wright, directed by George C. Wolfe. Wright reprised his Off-Broadway performance opposite rap artist Mos Def for the Broadway run. The production received two 2002 Tony nominations, including Best Play, and won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, making Parks the first Black woman to win the honor.
