Playwrights Horizons and Soho Rep have found casting and a creative team for their upcoming world premiere of Jordan Tannahill's Prince Faggot, set to play Playwrights' Peter Jay Sharp Theater beginning May 30 and continuing through July 6. Opening night will be June 16. Shayok Misha Chowdhury is directing the co-production.
The ensemble cast will feature Rachel Crowl (Between Two Knees), K. Todd Freeman (Downstate), David Greenspan (Marie Antoinette), Mihir Kumar (Law and Order: SVU), John McCrea (Cabaret), and N’yomi Allure Stewart (A Raisin in the Sun).
Described in press notes as a "meta-theatrical satire," the work features a queer and gender expansive ensemble daring to imagine a monarch from their own community.
“We may be imagining royals in this play, but the ensemble are the leads, the protagonists, as we think through the ways colonization has shaped our lives, the ways our sexualities intersect with power, and the ways we talk about queer childhood—and why, so often, we don’t," says Tannahill in a statement. "I’ve found the way to engage in topics like this is not to shy away from them. The intent is less provocation than to speak as clearly, and honestly as possible—and perhaps to ask why that can sound so provocative.”
“Jordan has written the kind of audacious theatrical experiment that excites me most as a director," adds Chowdhury. "It’s a group of performers allowing themselves to inhabit characters that are usually off-limits to them, and through that act of irreverence, inviting us all to imagine a little more freely.”
The production will feature scenic design by David Zinn, costume design by Montana Levi Blanco, lighting design by Isabella Byrd, sound design and original music by Lee Kinney, wig and hair design by Cookie Jordan, dramaturgy by Sarah Lunnie, and intimacy coordination by UnkleDave's Fight-House. Ryan Gohsman will serve as production stage manager.
