Queen, a new play written entirely in Queen Victoria’s own words, will play the Assembly Rooms this Edinburgh Fringe. Running at 1 PM August 1 through 25, the production will preview prior to Edinburgh at London's Tabard Theatre on July 28.

Taken directly from her letters and journals, Queen will star Sara Crowe and Grace Darling, with the voice of Prunella Scales. Directed by Denise Silvey, Queen is a revisal of Katrina Hendrey’s acclaimed one-woman show An Evening With Queen Victoria, which Scales performed for 28 years, starting at the Old Vic in 1980. Now adapted and re-titled Queen by writer Julian Machin, this production incorporates a recently-made voiceover of Scales as the elderly monarch whose recorded words are interlaced into the action.

Queen will feature music by the late Richard Burnett, recorded by Michael Dussek on an 1822 grand piano by Muzio Clementi. The play is presented by Chronicles of Ikaro in Association with Cahoots Theatre Company.
