Written and directed by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Shanley, the play is billed as an "explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction." The story follows a teenage boy from the Bronx, played by Chalamet, who is suddenly thrown into the world of a private school in New Hampshire. Violent, gifted, lonely and alienated, he prompts his teacher, played by Leonard, to struggle with the question of whether he is a genius or a train wreck.
Performances take place at MTC at New York City Center – Stage I. The creative team features Santo Loquasto (scenic design), Jennifer Von Mayrhauser (costume design), Natasha Katz (lighting design), Fitz Patton (sound design), Paul Simon (original music) and Charlotte Fleck (dialect coach.)
Shanley is the author of the Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning Doubt and the Oscar-winning film "Moonstruck," starring Cher. He was nominated for an Academy Award again in 2009 for the adapted screenplay to his stage work "Doubt," starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
