New production shots are giving a first look at a new Oedipus at London's The Old Vic, led by Academy Award winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Olivier winner Indira Varma (Present Laughter). Take a look in the gallery below.
Opening night is February 4, with the run continuing through March 29. Previews began January 21.
Ella Hickson has penned a new adaptation of the Sophocles tragedy, commissioned by the London theatre in 2019. Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus is collaborating with choreographer Hofesh Shechter (Fiddler on the Roof) on the production, with both serving as co-directors. The revival is being presented by The Old Vic in association with Hofesh Shechter Company.
The cast also includes Nicholas Khan as Creon, Joseph Mydell as Corinthian, Cecilia Noble as Tiresias, and Nicholas Woodeson as Shepherd, plus a dance company featuring the Hofesh Shechter Company's Justine Gouache, Charles Heinrich, Kenny Wing Tao Ho, Adam Khazhmuradov, Kim Kohlmann, Oscar Jinghu Li, Yen-Ching Lin, Rachelle Scott, Jian-Hui Wang, and Zee Zunnur. Casting is by Jim Carnahan. Children's casting is by Saffeya Shebli.
The classic tale follows King Oedipus, tasked by his subjects to avenge the murder of the old King Laius in hopes that it will fulfill an oracle's prophecy.
The production features choreography and music by Shechter, scenic and costume design by Rae Smith, lighting design by Tom Visser, and sound design by Chris Shutt.
