Pasek & Paul, Claudia Shear Writing Original TV Musical for NBC | Playbill

News Pasek & Paul, Claudia Shear Writing Original TV Musical for NBC In the wake of the successful broadcast of The Wiz Live!, NBC is again expanding its relationship with Broadway, announcing that is developing an original TV musical, "Voice of the City" with a script by Clauda Shear (Tuck Everlasting, Dirty Blonde) and a score by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dogfight, Dear Evan Hansen).

The hourlong musical, being produced by Universal Television, is set in New York of 1891. No word on whether the story is connected with the O. Henry story, the 1929 movie, or the 2004 Off-Broadway musical, all of which used the same title.

NBC has embraced Broadway in recent years, with the series "Smash" and the musical events "The Sound of Music Live!" and "Peter Pan Live!"

According to Deadline.com, the TV special will be  "a sweeping story told from the point of view of a romantic showman, Patrick, and his love, Lucy, as they struggle to create a life in a new land in the only business they know."

No broadcast date or cast were announced.

Pasek and Paul supplied some of the songs for "Smash" and earned a Tony nomination for their score to A Christmas Story. They also wrote scores to Dogfight, James and the Giant Peach and Dear Evan Hanson. Shear's Tuck Everlasting is scheduled to open on Broadway in spring 2016. She was nominated for the Tony Awards for Best Play and Best Actress for her 2000 play Dirty Blonde, a play about film icon Mae West.
