It's the first new musical of the 2014-15 Broadway season to pay off its investment and turn a profit. The show continues to run at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it opened April 19, 2015.
Producers Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson and Barbara Whitman issued a joint statement saying "We're so proud Fun Home has resonated with audience members in such a profound way. We hope that the success of Fun Home will inspire others to produce groundbreaking, challenging and exciting new works of musical theater on Broadway."
The musical is slated to launch a national tour in November 2016.
Based on Alison Bechdel's best-selling autobiographical novel of the same title, the musical tells the story of a young woman's coming of age as a lesbian, and her thorny relationship with her father who, as it turns out, is a closeted gay man. The show has music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and direction by Sam Gold, whose work on this production earned them Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction.
Most of the original cast is still in the show, including two-time Tony Award-winner Michael Cerveris as the father, four-time Tony Award nominee Judy Kuhn as the mother, 2015 Tony Award nominee Beth Malone, 2015 Tony Award nominee Emily Skeggs, and others.
