Nazareth Hassan

Vineyard Theatre has named Nazareth Hassan the theatre's Tow Foundation Playwright Residency grant award winner for 2023-24. The program gives artists the opportunity to focus on their craft and debut their work, while gaining insight into the nonprofit theatre world.

Hassan is an interdisciplinary artist who works in performance, writing, music, video, and photography. Their work has been presented in London, Mexico City, and Berlin.

“At a time when artists need more support than they ever have, we couldn’t be more honored to be working with TOW to bring on Nazareth Hassan as our playwright in residence," says Vineyard Associate Artistic Director Jesse Cameron Alick in a statement. "Nazareth is a brilliant and original artist, working interdisciplinary to combine text, movement, and sound to radically expand what live performance can be. We are so excited to have the support to be working with them in depth and long term.”

Vineyard is one of 14 New York City theatres that have been selected to award the grant to a playwright of their choosing, while serving as an artistic home for the playwright's continued development.
