Music Theatre International has released Beautiful: The Carole King Musical for a limited time, with licensing now available for performances from June 1, 2023, through August 31, 2025.
With a book by late Tony and Oscar nominee Douglas McGrath, direction by Marc Bruni, and choreography by Josh Prince, Beautiful features an array of songs written by the songwriting teams of Gerry Goffin/Carole King and Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil. Numbers include “So Far Away,” “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.”
“Doug was an incredible writer, actor, and friend who brought an intimacy and reverence to the story of Carole King’s life,” says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen in a statement. “I know how thrilled he would have been to see his musical take on a new energy and meaning through the many theatres licensing this incredible show. MTI is honored to preserve Doug’s legacy by giving actors, directors, and audience members throughout the world, the opportunity to experience this seminal work of art.”
The musical received its world premiere at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in October 2013, and made its Broadway debut at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in January 2014. A West End production began in February 2015, and a U.S. tour launched in September of that year. MTI acquired the licensing rights to the musical in 2018, but the work's Broadway and touring productions have kept it from being available for new productions up until now.
Music Theatre International is one of the world's leading theatrical licensing agencies, granting schools as well as amateur and professional theatres the rights to perform the largest selection of musicals from Broadway and beyond. MTI works directly with the composers, lyricists, and book writers of these shows to provide official scripts, musical materials, and theatrical resources to over 60 countries.
