Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, the Drama Desk Award–nominated creators of Broadway’s The Story of My Life, were originally commissioned to write The Theory of Relativity by the Canadian Music Theatre Project at Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada. The show was developed at American universities such as Penn State, the University of Oklahoma, Michigan and Boston Conservatory, and has been seen in numerous productions, including international presentations in London and Toronto, and cabaret performances at New York's 54 Below and Birdland. It was most recently produced by Goodspeed Musicals in East Haddam, CT.
According to production notes, the show was “written for and about college-age youth. Much in the style of A Chorus Line, composer/lyricist Neil Bartram and bookwriter Brian Hill sat down with a group of young actors and listened to their hilarious and heartbreaking stories about home, childhood, family, love and loss. Inspired by these stories, they have crafted an emotional and highly accessible show that explores the profound sense of connection in these diverse personal narratives. Brimming with youthful exuberance and quirkiness, Bartram's score gives unique voice to that awkward dance to adulthood while upending familiar themes in unexpected ways.”
A cast album was released in April by PS Classics.
“Our work with college theatre students inspired Brian and me to create The Theory of Relativity based on their unique stories and experiences,” Bartram said. “Yet we've learned through the process that audiences of all ages respond to the universality of the quest for human connection. We're thrilled that now the wonderful team at MTI (who have given such a successful afterlife to our show The Story of My Life) will now be introducing The Theory of Relativity to a much wider audience.”
“We feel so close to this show and the many incredible young people whose stories inspired it,” said Hill. “We’re thrilled that MTI joins us in our excitement to share these stories.”
