Mrs. Smith's Broadway Cat-Tacular! Claws its Way to Off-Broadway | Playbill

News Mrs. Smith's Broadway Cat-Tacular! Claws its Way to Off-Broadway Performance artist and writer David Hanbury is set to bring his cabaret, Mrs. Smith's Broadway Cat-Tacular! to Off-Broadway this summer. Returning to the stage as comic alter ego Mrs. Smith herself, Hanbury will be joined by "Broadway Boys" Brandon Haagenson and Ken Lear in what is dubbed as "an all-singing, all-dancing demented cabaret on acid."

Directed by Andrew Rasmussen, performances will begin July 10 at the 47th Street Theatre. An official opening night is slated for July 20.

The show arrives Off-Broadway after previously playing performances at venues across the U.S. including the American Repertory Theatre and New York City's Laurie Beechman. The story follows Mrs. Smith, a woman on the verge of a breakdown due to her missing cat, Carlyle. To try and overcome her grief, she attempts to mount a Broadway-style musical where her bizarre life story is re-enacted in song and dance with the aid of her "Broadway Boys."

The cabaret blends classic Broadway hits like "One Night in Bangkok," "Cabaret," "The Man That Got Away," with character comedy, tap dancing, puppetry, video flashbacks and more.

Hanbury's comic alter ego Mrs. Smith has performed at A.R.T's Emerging America Festival, Oberon, Berkeley Rep, 54 Below, Ars Nova, Dixon Place, Upright Citizens Brigade and numerous other notable venues throughout the country.
