John Cudia has been playing the title role since May 22 (McGillin's last show was May 17), and will play the matinee July 30 before handing the mask to McGillin for the evening show.
With a record-breaking tally of over 2,000 performances, McGillin has played the title role more than any other performer on Broadway. John Cudia is a vet of the Broadway and touring productions.
During his time away from the show, Tony Award nominee McGillin (among other things) shot the film "All Good Things" starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst. He was originally scheduled to return to Phantom July 28.
McGillin's Tony nominations were for his work in The Mystery of Edwin Drood and Anything Goes.
Phantom is the longest-running show in Broadway history. Its current principals include Jennifer Hope Wills as Christine Daaé, Elizabeth Loyacano as Christine Daaé (at certain performances), Tim Martin Gleason as Raoul, Patricia Phillips as Carlotta, George Lee Andrews as Monsieur Andre, David Cryer as Monsieur Firmin, Rebecca Judd as Madame Giry, Evan Harrington as Piangi and Polly Baird as Meg Giry.
