On December 19, Mary Poppins Returns floats into cinemas nationwide. The original movie musical, drawing from the Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers, stars Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) as the no-nonsense nanny and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as Jack, a lamplighter the same age as the now-adult Jane and Michael Banks (Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw).
Picking up 24 years after the original 1964 film, which starred Julie Andrews in the title role, the new film features a brand new story and a score by Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash).
The film follows the Banks children—children no more—after Michael’s wife has passed away, leaving him to raise his three children on his own at the house on London’s Cherry Tree Lane. The cast also includes Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, and original Mary Poppins star Dick Van Dyke.
