Video Mary Poppins Returns’ Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda Talk the Magic of Making the Movie Musical The stars of the film, director Rob Marshall, and executive producer Marc Platt reveal secrets behind their work on the sequel to Mary Poppins.

On December 19, Mary Poppins Returns will finally land in cinemas nationwide. The original movie musical, drawing from the Mary Poppins series by P.L. Travers, stars Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) as the no-nonsense nanny and Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) as Jack, a lamplighter the same age as the now-adult Jane and Michael Banks, played by Emily Mortimer and Ben Whishaw.

But Jane and Michael are at a loss. Michael’s wife has passed away, leaving him to raise his three children on his own at the house on London’s Cherry Tree Lane.

“Everything is upside down,” says director-choreographer Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods), who also co-conceived the story. “The adults are children, the children are adults, they’re growing up too fast. So Mary Poppins needs to come and bring a ray of light to this world.”

The film also features appearances by Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury, and Mary Poppins star Dick Van Dyke.
