Set in a small pub in Oldham, the play tells the story of Harry, who is something of a local celebrity. But what's the second-best hangman in England to do on the day they've abolished hanging? Amongst those dying to hear Harry's reaction to the news, a peculiar stranger lurks, with a very different motive for his visit.

McDonagh's most recent play, A Behanding in Spokane, premiered on Broadway in 2010. His previous plays for the Royal Court, which subsequently transferred to Broadway, include The Beauty Queen of Leenane, A Skull in Connemara and The Lonesome West. Other plays include The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Pillowman, both of which were originally produced at the National Theatre and have also been seen on Broadway and The Lieutenant of Inishmore (premiered by the RSC and subsequently seen on Broadway).
