Smith, a Tony winner for her performance in Lettice and Lovage, and currently popular for playing the Dowager Countess in the TV series "Downton Abbey," plays Miss Mary Shepherd, "an eccentric woman of uncertain origins, who 'temporarily' parked her broken-down van in Bennett’s London driveway — and proceeded to live there for the next 15 years," according to a previous description. The film also features Alex Jennings as playwright Bennett with James Corden, Frances de la Tour, Roger Allam, Dominic Cooper and Jim Broadbent.
Director Hytner produced along with Damian Jones and Kevin Loader.
