News Live Musicals Receive Significant Emmy Recognition Fox’s Grease: Live received the most Emmy Award nominations of any live musical event, with ten total nods. NBC’s The Wiz Live! also scored big.

Nominations for the 68th Emmy Awards were announced July 14, and live musical events ranked high this year. The Fox broadcast of Grease: Live received ten nominations (the most of any live musical event in history), and The Wiz Live! received six.

The production of Grease received nods for Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Event Or Award Special (David Korins); Outstanding Casting For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special; Outstanding Costumes For A Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Program (William Ivey Long); Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special (Thomas Kail); Outstanding Hairstyling For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special; Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Special; Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special (Non-Prosthetic); Outstanding Special Class Program; Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety Series Or Special; and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special.

“I am so grateful for Grease: Live’s nominations this morning,” said producer Marc Platt. “What means the most to me is that almost every department was recognized. To pull off something that ambitious required an extraordinary team effort at every level and everyone on our production performed at their very best. It was such a privilege to work with such a talented group of people, and I’m thrilled that the Academy recognized their outstanding work. Congratulations to the whole team.”

Director Kail added, “I am so proud to be part of the team that worked on Grease: Live. It took hundreds of people all working at the top of their game to make this show. We were so honored to bring live theatre to television audiences! Grease 2 anyone??” Production designer Korins said, “Getting the opportunity to re-imagine this classic show for millions of people was certainly one of the highlights of my career.”

The Wiz received nods for Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Event Or Award Special (Derek McLane); Outstanding Costumes For A Variety, Nonfiction Or Reality Program (Paul Tazewell); Outstanding Hairstyling For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special; Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Special; Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or Special (Non-Prosthetic); and Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special.
