Black Watch Theatre has announced it will offer a private industry reading of Annie Pulsipher and Alex Petti's The Trouble With Dead Boyfriends November 19. Rachel Klein (The Gospel According to Heather) is set to direct.
The cast will include Antonio Cipriano (Jagged Little Pill), Leana Rae Concepcion (Merrily We Roll Along), Cara Rose DiPietro, Alan H Green, Ashanti J'aria (The Prom), Ashley D. Kelley (Shucked), Livvy Marcus, Nichalas Parker (Aladdin), Benjamin Jackson Walker (& Juliet), and Daniel Quadrino (The Who’s Tommy).
The new work features a book by Pulsipher, music by Petti, and lyrics by both, with additional orchestrations by Sheela Ramesh. The story follows three best friends who attempt to summon their dream prom dates with a sketchy love spell, and instead create a trio of monstrous boyfriends.
The Trouble with Dead Boyfriends was previously workshopped and developed at Carnegie Mellon's Playground Festival and Berklee College of Music. It was also presented at the Premiere Premieres! Festival in Chicago in 2017 and SheNYC Festival in New York in 2018, and received awards from both presentations. It ran Off-Broadway at the Players Theatre in summer 2023, and Discovering Broadway staged a concert presentation in April.
