Latiné Musical Theatre Lab and Prospect Theater Company has set a 2024 edition of New Musicals Mixtape, featuring new musicals written by members of the Lab's Julia de Burgos Cohort. Part of Prospect's IGNITE Concert Series, the event will be held January 22, 2024, at 5:00 PM and 8:00 PM at Chelsea Factory.
New musicals that will be showcased include Fat Girl Starving by Jessie Field and James Martinez Salem; Brother by Miranda Holliday, Reginald Bennett Jr., and Justin D. Cook; Harvest Of Empire by Rebecca Murillo; Como Correr: A Hip Pop Musical by Nico Raimont; This Old Haunt by SMJ, Maggie Kane, and Rebecca Wahls; and Next Door by Paloma de Vega.
The concert will feature selections from each new musical, as well as interviews with the writing team discussing their work. Hosts, creative team, and performers will be announced at a later date.
Throughout fall 2023, the Latiné Musical Theatre Lab hosted The Julia de Burgos Cohort, which is made up of six teams of writers working on new musicals. The program offers mentorship and support for Latiné writers to develop their shows. Over the course of three months, the cohort, facilitated by Rose Van Dyne and Amelia Johnson, met biweekly to collaborate.
The New Musicals Mixtape is made possible in part by a project support from the National Endowment for the Arts, the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.
