Masschusetts' Barrington Stage Company has revealed the first two shows the company will present in its upcoming 30th anniversary season: La Cage aux Folles and Next to Normal. Artistic Director Alan Paul will helm the latter, a co-production with Bethesda, Maryland's Round House Theatre. Dates, casting, and further creative teams are to be announced.

"I have been thinking about the many variations of what constitutes a family, which is an element I feel that is explored, in very different ways, in both the ebullient La Cage aux Folles, and the gripping Next to Normal,” says Paul in a statement. "We are really thrilled to announce these two sensational musicals as the tentpoles of our 30th anniversary season, with a lot of exciting news still to come."

La Cage aux Folles, based on Jean Poirot's play, features a book by Harvey Fierstein and a score by Jerry Herman, and centers on a gay couple running a French drag club who find themselves having to play pretend to fall under the good graces of their son's fiancé's ultra-conservative family. The musical, a Best Musical Tony winner, shares source material with the 1995 film The Birdcage. Barrington's production will be presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals.

Next to Normal features a book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. A Pulitzer winner, the 2009 musical follows the mental health struggles of Goodman family matriarch Diana. Barrington's production is licensed by Music Theatre International.
