Tony winner Kara Young is set to star in the film adaptation of Alesha Harris' Is God Is. Produced by Amazon MGM Orion Pictures’, news of the film adaptation was broken by Deadline.
Young will star alongside Mallori Johnson, with the pair portraying two outcast twin sisters. They will be joined by Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown, Vivica A. Fox, and Grammy nominee Janelle Monáe.
Harris has adapted her own script, and will direct the film. In the play, a mother’s dying wish jump starts the journey of scorned twin sisters Anaia and Racine, who go on a cross-country adventure to exact righteous revenge after it is revealed that their absent father is the reason for their disfiguring burn scars, and their mothers bedridden state. The piece premiered Off-Broadway at Soho Rep in 2018, winning three Obie awards, including playwriting for Harris, directing for Taibi Magar, and a joint performance award for Alfie Fuller as Anaia and Dame-Jasmine Hughes as Racine. Harris’ 2023 play, On Sugarland, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The film adaptation is being produced by Riva Marker, Sundance Film Festival winner Janicza Bravo, Tessa Thompson, and Kishori Rajan. Information on a release date is not yet available.
