A.R. Gurney’s Sylvia, about a man who ponders life with his talking dog, will begin performances January 10 at Rochester’s Geva Theatre Center starring Jennifer Cody in the title role. Her husband, actor Hunter Foster, is also among the cast.
The two have shared the stage multiple times, including in Broadway’s Urinetown and Grease.
Directed by Mark Cuddy, the production features Foster as Tom, Phyllis, and Leslie; Dee Hoty as Kate; and John Scherer as Greg, Sylvia’s owner.
Here’s how Geva bills the show: “Empty nesters Greg and Kate have relocated back to Manhattan after two decades of raising their family in the suburbs. As Kate observes: ‘The dog phase of my life is definitely over.’ When Greg finds Sylvia, a street-smart Labradoodle, in Central Park and brings her home, she becomes a bone of contention between Greg and Kate, testing their marriage to howlingly hilarious and touching effect.”
Other members of the creative team include scenic designer Jo Winiarski, costume designer Susan Branch Towne, and lighting designer Ann G. Wrightson. Original music and sound design are by Scott Killian, and Jenni Werner is the production’s dramaturg.
