The long-aborning film remake of the 1959 Broadway musical Gypsy is back on track. Emmy Award-winning Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is in talks to direct the film for New Regency, Deadline reports.

No stars are currently attached to the project, which was previously in development with Barbra Streisand as director and star. The Streisand-driven remake was shelved after STX withdrew as co-producer and distributor in 2016. Richard LaGravenese was adapting the script with Streisand, who had been at work on the project for several years. A Star Is Born Oscar nominee Lady Gaga was among Streisand's top choices to play the role of Louise/Gypsy.

Sherman-Palladino is fresh off her Emmy Award wins as creator, writer, director, and producer of the hit Amazon Prime series The Marevelous Mrs. Maisel. She made history with her double wins for Comedy Writing and Comedy Directing on Mrs. Maisel, becoming the first writer-director to win the honors for a series pilot, and becoming the first woman to win both awards in the 70-year history of the Emmys.

Sherman-Palladino is also the creator of The Gilmore Girls and produced the Broadway revival of Violet. Mrs. Maisel features an array of theatre actors and Broadway favorites as series regulars and guest stars.

Based on the autobiography of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee—and originally written for Ethel Merman–Gypsy has a book by the late Arthur Laurents, with music by the late Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Gypsy was filmed in 1962 with Rosalind Russell in the role. Bette Midler starred in an acclaimed 1993 made-for-television adaptation. The various Broadway productions were led by Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone.
