What better day than Groundhog Day to plan a production of... well, Groundhog Day? Music Theatre International has released the West End and Broadway title, adapted from the 1993 film, for licensing worldwide after adding the show to its library in 2018. Some international restrictions may apply.
Featuring a score by Matilda songwriter Tim Minchin and a book by Danny Rubin, the musical premiered at London's Old Vic in 2016 and played a brief Broadway run the following year. The work returned to the Old Vic for an encore run in 2023.
Both London stagings and the Broadway bow were led by Andy Karl, who won an Olivier and earned a Tony nomination playing Phil Connors, a weatherman forced to relive Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, on an endless loop.
"Groundhog Day is one of my favorite films and the musical is a fantastic re-imagining of the source material," says MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen in a statement. "Danny Rubin’s book retains the story’s humor and warmth, while adding exciting new elements for the stage, and Tim Minchin’s brilliant songs really bring the characters and their challenges to life in this medium. Having all lived our own versions of Groundhog Day in the past few years, audiences connect with this story more than ever. This is one musical comedy that we hope customers will license over and over and over again."
The theatrical licensor has prepared a number of special resources available for productions of the musical, including keyboard programming, a logo pack, and on-demand transpositions.
