From long-running favorites to surprising new offerings—here are five shows we recommend coming to see this spring in New York.

Jeremy Jordan in Floyd Collins Joan Marcus

Floyd Collins

Vivian Beaumont Theater
150 65th St., New York, NY

Floyd Collins is based on a true story of a cave explorer in Kentucky in 1925. While chasing a dream of fame and fortune, Collins becomes the attraction when he gets trapped 200 feet underground. The show had its world premiere in 1996, and and is now making its Broadway debut. This score by Adam Guettel is a masterclass in bluegrass-Americana, and the book by Tina Landau is both haunting and beautiful. If you love your musicals to be entirely unpredictable and surprising, even a bit artsy, then run to Lincoln Center for Floyd Collins

Hadestown

Walter Kerr Theatre
219 W. 48th St., New York, NY

I had to include Hadestown, because it is a popular Tony Award-winning musical, which posits that “a song can change your fate." This musical by singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell, a moving retelling of the myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, invites you to imagine how the world could be. If you’d like to hear more from Merle Dandridge (now playing Persephone) and Carlos Valdes (Orpheus), check out the Playbill Podcast that just launched

Hell's Kitchen

Sam S. Shubert Theatre
225 W. 44th St., New York, NY

Any Alicia Keys fans out there? Hell’s Kitchen, the award-winning Broadway musical created and inspired by Keys' own upbringing, takes the audience on the journey of Ali, a 17-year-old young woman who is determined to find her voice in '90s New York. And this show is FIRE. I cannot get over the surprising way Keys' hit songs are performed, the out-of-this-world choreography, and vocals. It truly brings New York City to life and will leave you with an "empire state of mind."

Just in Time

Circle in the Square Theatre
235 W. 50th St., New York, NY

Two Words: Jonathan Groff. The Tony Award-winner is back on Broadway, playing the iconic crooner Bobby Darin in Just in Time! I got to see this show last week and it is such a joy! The legendary singer, whose short but remarkable life took him from teen idol to global sensation, is the story you will become part of (literally). After hearing Darin’s many hits (including “Beyond the Sea,” “Mack the Knife,” “Splish Splash,” and “Dream Lover”) performed by a stellar cast, with that big band sound, you will leave with your hearts racing, spirit filled, and the biggest smile on your face!

Real Women Have Curves

James Earl Jones Theatre
138 W. 48th St., New York, NY

I will admit, I have never seen Real Women Have Curves in its play or film versions. But, I have seen it on Broadway, and it is outstanding. With music by Grammy Award-winning composer Joy Huerta and directed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo, this all-new musical is funny, joyous, and empowering. I cannot wait to return with friends and family; it's the type of show you can take anyone you love to and they will leave with their hearts warmed.
