George Street Playhouse's five-show 2022-2023 season will feature two world premieres: the new musical Joy and Steve Guttenberg's autobiographical comedy, Tales From the Guttenberg Bible.
The upcoming season at the New Jersey venue will kick off October 11 with Mfoniso Udofia’s Her Portmanteau. Directed by George Street Artistic Associate Laiona Michelle, performances will continue through October 30. The play—the fourth in Udofia’s nine-play Ufot family cycle about the Nigerian American identity—centers around reconciliation, reinvention, and the relationship between mothers and their daughters.
The aforementioned Joy, featuring a book by Ken Davenport and music and lyrics by AnnMarie Milazzo, will make its world premiere beginning December 7 with choreography by Joshua Bergasse and direction by Casey Hushion. Based on the life of Joy Mangano—the entrepreneur, inventor, and best-selling author who invented the Miracle Mop—the musical will continue through December 30. The George Street production is presented in association with Sandi Moran and Davenport.
Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage's Tony-nominated Clyde's, seen on Broadway this past season, will follow, running January 31-February 19, 2023. The comedy spotlights the formerly incarcerated kitchen staff at a truck stop sandwich shop.
The 2005 Tony-nominated The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee will play the New Jersey theatre beginning March 14. Conceived by Rebecca Feldman and featuring a Tony-winning book by Rachel Sheinkin and music and lyrics by William Finn, the musical comedy will be directed by Broadway actor Colin Hanlon (In Transit, Falsettos). Performances will continue through April 9.
Rounding out the George Street season will be the world premiere of Tales From the Guttenberg Bible, an autobiographical comedy from Steve Guttenberg (Three Men and a Baby, Police Academy, Cocoon). Directed by Artistic Director David Saint and featuring Guttenberg and a cast to be announced, the comedy details run-ins with everyone from Tom Selleck to Gregory Peck. Performances are April 25-May 21.
