TheatreWashington has announced the nominees for the 2017 Helen Hayes Awards, which honor theatrical productions in Washington, D.C., staged in 2016.
Come From Away, the Broadway-bound musical about a group of travelers whose planes were diverted to a small Newfoundland town following the September 11 attacks in 2001, was nominated for 14 awards, including Outstanding Musical Production, Outstanding Choreography, Outstanding Musical Direction, Outstanding Direction, Outstanding Ensemble, Outstanding Supporting Actress (Jen Colella), and Outstanding Supporting Actor (Joel Hatch). Both Hatch and Colella will reprise their performances on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
Award recipients will be announced at the 33rd Helen Hayes Awards gala at the Lincoln Theatre May 15.
The awards are divided into two categories: Helen and Hayes. Shows with a majority of performers who are Equity actors are categorized as Hayes shows, and shows that do not employ a majority of Equity actors are Helen shows.
