New York's Classical Theatre of Harlem has announced that its upcoming 25th anniversary season will be dedicated to the late Andre Braugher.

A longtime trustee of the New York institution, Mr. Braugher served as a vice chairman for the company. He died December 11 of lung cancer, but his final wishes directed mourners to support the theatre company in his absence. 

As an actor, Mr. Braugher was best known for his roles as Detective Frank Pembleton in the police drama series Homicide: Life on the Street, used car salesman Owen Thoreau Jr. in the comedy-drama series Men of a Certain Age, and police captain Raymond Holt in the police comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. For his television work, Mr. Braugher received two Primetime Emmy Awards from 11 nominations, as well as two Golden Globe nominations. 

His career began onstage in 1988, when he was cast in Coriolanus at the Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park. In between his screen work, Mr. Braugher acted Off-Broadway and regionally. His recent credits included As You Like It (2012) at Shakespeare in the Park, The Whipping Man (2011) at Manhattan Theatre Club, and Tell Them I'm Still Young (2019) at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in New Jersey.

As was announced earlier this year, Classical Theatre of Harlem's 2024 season will feature NYC's only free summer Shakespeare in the Park series, as The Public's annual offering will be dark as Central Park's Delacorte Theater undergoes refurbishments.
