Four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks directs Shows for Days, which began previews June 6 and is currently scheduled through Aug. 23 at the Mitzi E. Newhouse. Tony Award nominee Beane is the playwright of The Nance, The Little Dog Laughed, as well as the librettist for Cinderella and Lysistrata Jones.
The play marks LuPone's first Off-Broadway appearance since The Cradle Will Rock in 1983. The production reunites LuPone (Gypsy, Evita, Anything Goes) with Urie (Buyer & Cellar, The Temperamentals), who appeared together on the sitcom "Ugly Betty," in which LuPone guest starred as Urie's mother. The two are joined on stage by Broadway veteran Dale Soules (Hands on a Hardbody, "Orange Is the New Black"), Jordan Dean (The New Century), Lance Coadie Williams (BootyCandy) and Zoë Winters (4000 Miles).
According to LCT, "Shows for Days is playwright Douglas Carter Beane's fond remembrance of his immersion into a life in the theatre. The comedy is set in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1973, when 14-year-old Car, the play's narrator and the author's alter-ego (to be played by Urie), is introduced to the world of theatre through his local community theatre, the Prometheus Theatre, and its devoted cast and crew which is led by Irene (to be played by LuPone), an indomitable force of nature whose life is dedicated to putting on productions she directs, designs, and stars in."
