Nachtland, a new satire by Marius von Mayenburg, translated by Maja Zade, will make its U.K. premiere next year at the Young Vic Theatre.
Directed by Tony winner Patrick Marber (Leopoldstadt), performances are scheduled for February 20-April 20, 2024, with an official opening February 27.
The cast will be led by Romola Garai (Atonement, The Hour) as Nicola, Jane Horrocks (Little Voice, Cabaret) as Evamaria, John Heffernan (Much Ado About Nothing, Edward II) as Philipp, Angus Wright (Flowers, Peep Show) as Kahl, and Jenna Augen (Leopoldstadt, Bad Jews) as Judith. Further casting will be announced.
Nachtland, an invented German word that suggests a place of eternal darkness, is set in modern-day Germany and concerns Nicola and Philipp, who argue as they clear out their late
father’s house. When they find an old painting stashed in the attic,
things get savage.
Von Mayenburg's plays include Fireface, Plastic, and The Ugly One. Zade’s previous translations include works by Lars von Trier, Roland Schimmelpfennig, and Lars Norén.
The upcoming production will also have design by Anna Fleischle, lighting design by Richard Howell, composition and sound design by Adam Cork, movement direction by EJ Boyle, and casting by Amy Ball.
