McCarter Theatre Center is currently presenting a closed-session workshop of its newest commission, I and You: A Musical, an adaptation of the Lauren Gunderson play.

The closed-session workshop, directed by McCarter Artistic Director Sarah Rasmussen, continues through March 15 and features Casey Likes (Back to the Future The Musical) as Anthony and Salena Qureshi (The Society, Madame Secretary) as Caroline.

I and You: A Musical, with a book by Gunderson and music and lyrics by Ari Afsar, sets the teenage angst and aspirations of its protagonists, Caroline and Anthony, against the poetry of Walt Whitman. The original play premiered at California's Marin Theatre Company in 2013, winning the 2014 Harold and Mimi Steinberg/American Theatre Critics Association New Play Award and earning recognition as a finalist for the 2014 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.

“Having directed the premiere of the play I and You in 2013, I am so thrilled revisit this now iconic and beloved narrative with the brilliant talents of Ari Afsar and Lauren Gunderson. Just like its source play, I and You: A Musical will move audiences for generations to come. It’s in McCarter's DNA to boldly foster new work that will shape our field. It's a joy and honor to be part bringing this project to life," shared director Rasmussen in a statement.

The creative team also includes music director Sujin Kim-Ramsey, stage manager Danielle Ranno, dramaturg Julie Felise Dubiner, and artistic assistant Jaimee Harmon-Taboni with casting by Daryl Eisenberg.

I and You: A Musical is being developed with the support of the BOLD Foundation and Broadway Licensing Group.
