Casting has been revealed for the world premiere of Hello Kitty Must Die, which will be mounted at Edinburgh Fringe next month. Based on the cult novel by Kate Kamen (formally Angela S. Choi), Broadway alums Amy Keum and Jully Lee from KPOP will star in the show at Pleasance Courtyard's Pleasance 2 August 2-27. The musical is produced by the producers behind Six and The Play That Goes Wrong, pointing to a potential future for the show if it does well in Edinburgh.
Hello Kitty Musy Die has been adapted into a stage musical that brings the original text's funny and empowering take on Asian feminism to new audiences. The story follows high-achieving lawyer Fiona Yu, played by Sami Ma (Rent) as she combats outdated stereotypes of Asian women and seeks her own version of the American Dream—and revenge. With anger fueling her and making her dream come true, Fiona goes on a journey of sex, violence, and stilettos as she tears into the expectations placed on Asian women. It's a journey of self-discovery that affirms women can be anything they want to be—even murderers.
Joining Ma, Lee, and Keum, will be Lennox T. Duong (Three Sisters) and Ann Hu (Raven’s Home).
The world premiere is produced by Alchemation (SIX, The Play That Goes Wrong, Mrs. Doubtfire). Alchemation is a producing entity led by Tony-winning producer Kevin McCollum. The novel was co-adapted by Gail Rastorfer and Kurt Johns with music by composer Cecilia Lin and lyricist Jessica Wu.
