Broadway State of Mind: Alicia Keys Musical Hell's Kitchen Sets 2024 Broadway Bow

The Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen will transfer to Broadway in 2024, with performances beginning March 28 ahead of an April 20 opening night at the Shubert Theatre. The musical, inspired by the 15-time Grammy winner's life and featuring a score of her best-known songs, is currently playing a world-premiere run Off-Broadway at The Public Theater through January 14, 2024.

Ticket pre-sales will begin December 8 with signup at HellsKitchen.com. General sale will begin December 11.

"Good things take time and for 13 years, I’ve been dreaming, developing, and finding inspiration for a musical based on my experience growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, NYC," says Keys in a statement. "Hell’s Kitchen is inspired by my life, but it’s not a biographical story. It’s a story about family relationships and identity: Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who are we becoming? The score features new songs that I’m really excited to get out into the world alongside many of my album releases that you know but you’ve never heard like this—rearranged and reinterpreted. I’m honored to be a part of this Broadway season with so much incredible talent and great stories. I grew up with musical theatre and have so many memories of standing on line at TKTS to see shows like Miss Saigon and Rent. For me, Hell’s Kitchen is also a New York story of finding your dreams and for me, this musical coming to Broadway is the embodiment of that idea. I’ve learned so much from the experience and the collaboration with Michael Greif, Camille A. Brown, Kristoffer Diaz, and Adam Blackstone. I love and respect the art form so much, and I’m excited to see it come to Broadway.”

Hell's Kitchen features music and lyrics by Keys and a book by Kristoffer Diaz. The story centers on 17-year-old Ali and her mother, sharing a cramped apartment near Times Square. Ali wants to live out her NYC dream, but Mom is scared her daughter will repeat her own mistakes. The piece has been in development at the Off-Broadway company since at least February, when a casting notice for a developmental workshop was posted. The premiere is helmed by Michael Greif and choreographed by Camille A. Brown, who will both reprise their work for the Broadway production.

This show is just what we are hungry for: a reason to feel optimistic about the world, a reminder of why we love New York City, a celebration of how art and love can overcome any barrier. It's an amazing theatrical debut for one of the world's greatest songwriters—it is going to touch millions of people."

Casting for the Broadway bow has not yet been announced. The current Off-Broadway run is led by Maleah Joi Moon as Ali and Shoshana Bean as Ali's mother Jersey.

Greif's complete creative team will reprise their work on the Main Stem. The music team includes orchestrators Adam Blackstone and Tom Kitt, with arrangements by Keys and Blackstone. The creative team also includes scenic designer Robert Brill, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Gareth Owen, projection designer Peter Nigrini, and hair and wig designer Mia Neal. Foresight Theatrical is general manager.

AKW Productions is producing the Broadway run, with Aaron Lustbader serving as executive producer.
