Grosses Broadway Grosses Analysis: Ain't No Mo' Closes With Full Houses and Largest Gross of Run

Overall, the holiday week's reduced schedule led to a dip in receipts on the Main Stem.

Broadway saw a cumulative dip in grosses last week, dropping from $37 million the week prior to $34.8 million. Audiences remained steady at 83.5% capacity, leaving blame for the drop on a reduced performance schedule. With Christmas Eve and Christmas falling over the weekend, many productions played just seven performances, one less than the typical eight; and three shows—The CollaborationA Strange Loop, and Take Me Out—had to cancel at least one scheduled performance.

The altered performance schedule led to an unusual situation: The Music Man was not the number-one grossing show last week. That distinction went to fellow regular top grosser Hamilton, which did manage to fit in eight performances and bring in $2.66 million. But no worries for Hugh Jackman—the Meredith Willson revival (led by Jackman and fellow Tony winner Sutton Foster) still ranked number two with $2.62 million, followed by The Lion KingWicked, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Another major winner was Ain't No Mo', which, after struggling at the box office, ended its Broadway run December 23. No struggles in its final week, though; following a high-profile campaign to save the show that saw celebrities buying out performances, the Jordan E. Cooper play filled 98% of seats at the Belasco and brought in $765,341.50, the highest gross of the play's run by more than $250,000.

Also packing in audiences is The Phantom of the Opera, with theatregoers eager to see the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical one last time before it ends its historic 35-year run in April 2023. The British megamusical played to standing room-only last week with 101.44% of its seats filled. Wicked, thanks to the extra-large capacity at the Gershwin, continues to bring in the most humans; 15,120 people saw the Stephen Schwartz musical last week.
