Per Variety, Tony winners Audra McDonald and Myles Frost are teaming up for Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay's new film Caste, based on Pulitzer winner Isabel Wilkerson's nonfiction book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents.

The book, which was published in 2020, explores racism in the United States as an engrained caste system. The consequences of this stratification, and the ways in which it has affected American identity and history, are put on display, and compared to other caste systems throughout the world.

Details of how the film will adapt the text for the screen are not yet clear. McDonald and Frost join previously announced stars Aunjanue Ellis, Niecy Nash, Vera Farmiga, Nick Offerman, Connie Nielsen, Jon Bernthal, and Jasmine Cephas-Jones. Production on the film began in December 2022, with additional casting forthcoming.
