Taking the stage October 24, The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the New York Civil Liberties Union (NYCLU)'s 20th Annual Sing Out For Freedom benefit concert features performances and appearances by Broadway favorites. Set to begin at 7:30 PM, Sarah Jones and Busy Philipps host the evening.
The roster of performers and presenters includes Tony nominees Shoshana Bean and Ato Blankson-Wood (Slave Play), as well as Oscar nominee Siedah Garrett (Dreamgirls), Rock N'Roll Hall of Famer and writer Patti Smith, singer-songwriter Desmond Child, Alex Edelman (Just For Us), Kayla Davion (TINA: The Tina Turner Musical), Tomás Matos (Fire Island), Roy Wood Jr. (The Daily Show with Trevor Noah), Broadway For Racial Justice's founder Brandon Michael Nase, Sing Out For Freedom concert co-founder Liana Stampur, Sing Harlem (America's Got Talent), and actor, writer, and advocate Maybe Burke. Also performing are the casts of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning A Strange Loop and Roundabout's current Broadway revival of 1776.
The event also honors Emmy nominee Padma Lakshmi (Taste the Nation), Shaina Taub(Suffs), and Patti Smith (Just Kids). Erich Bergen directs the benefit concert, and serves as producer alongside Michael J. Moritz Jr. and Ari Conte.
Sing Out For Freedom was created to spotlight social injustices and civil rights issues through unforgettable, curated nights of the performing arts. This year will reflect on the ACLU and NYCLU's past two decades of progress and what lies ahead. The benefit concert was co-founded by Liana Stampur and Erich Bergen, along with NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman. Proceeds benefit the work of the NYCLU and the ACLU.
