The recording features performances from Aaron Cobos, Andro Crespo, Angy Fernández, Noemí Gallego, Daniel Garod, Pepe Nufrio, Raúl Ortiz, Nuria Pérez, Laia Prats, Roko, Víctor Ullate Roche, Javier Ariano, Daniel Garod, and Mónica Solaun.
The production was produced by Antonio Banderas alongside his theatre company Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, Estudio Caribe, and production director-musical director Emilio Aragón.
Godspell follows Teatro del Soho's earlier productions of A Chorus Line and Company, both of which starred and were helmed by Artistic Director and founder Antonio Banderas. Both earlier productions also resulted in new cast albums via Concord Theatricals Recordings.
"Slowly but surely, we are progressively creating a collection of musical theatre shows, originally conceived in the English language, and which we now present in Spanish," says Banderas in a statement. "Godspell is the third musical to occupy its place in this collection which was launched by Concord and Teatro del Soho CaixaBank just a few years ago with A Chorus Line, continued with Sondheim’s Company and now also includes Stephen Schwartz’s show. The recordings, far from being just isolated projects presented as musical documents, are inextricably linked to the production and presentation of the three shows, both at Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Malaga and other Spanish venues, to resounding critical acclaim and the applause and respect of audiences who have packed out the performances."
Banderas also released some news on which classic musical will receive the Teatro del Soho treatment next: They're Playing Our Song and Gypsy. "The theatre's management team aims to continue expanding the collection with the 2024 productions of They're Playing Our Song and Gypsy. We have a firm commitment to making the Spanish-speaking public aware of the scope, depth, and mastery of these great works of musical theatre, which are the pillars of one of the most loved and applauded genres worldwide. A big hug in C major."
Originally premiering Off-Broadway in 1971 (following a 1970 student production at Carnegie Mellon University) and on Broadway in 1976, Godspell re-tells The Gospel According to St. Matthew as a series of skits and songs, with Jesus and his disciples presented as loving clowns. Schwartz's score includes such songs as "Day by Day," "Turn Back, O Man," "Save the People," and more.
In the years since its premiere, Godspell has become a mainstay of community theatres, schools, churches, and regional theatres. The work was revived Off-Broadway in 1988 and 2000, and came back to the Main Stem in 2011 in a production starring Hunter Parrish, Uzo Aduba, Telly Leung, George Salazar, Lindsay Mendez, and more.
The new recording is produced by Banderas and Teatro del Soho CaixaBank and executive produced by Marc Montserrat-Drukker and Noelia Ortega. Music is produced by Manolo Toro, with album music direction and assistant music production by Olga Domínguez. The album was recorded, edited, and mixed by Toro and mastered by Oscar Zambrano.
