Whoopi Goldberg, who will succeed Nathan Lane in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum Feb. 11, and Liza Minnelli, who will take over for vacationing Julie Andrews in Victor/Victoria for the month of January, will not be the only Oscar-winning replacements on the immediate Broadway horizon.
Kim Hunter, who collected her 1951 Academy Award for recreating her original Broadway role of Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire, will replace Dulcie Gray as the daft Lady Markby Oct. 21 in An Ideal Husband at the Barrymore Theatre.
In fact, on that day, all the British imports will be replaced by a new cast in the Oscar Wilde antic. Michael Allison, Stephanie Beacham, Nicky Henson and James Warwick will take over roles currently held by Michael Denison, Anna Carteret, Martin Shaw and David Yelland. Madeleine Potter, who succeeded Penny Downie as Lady Chiltern shortly after the opening, will continue in that role.
Beacham, who will play the conniving temptress Mrs. Cheveley, is best-known to American audiences as Sable Colby on the "Dynasty" spin off, The Colbys, and , most recently , as Luke Perry's mother on"Beverly Hills 90210."
With its new cast, Peter Hall's critically acclaimed revival of Wilde's celebrated comedy will continue its opened-ended engagement at the Barrymore.
